How to Tame the Frizz

Man with curly frizzy hair to show needing Men's Barbershop Oak Lawn.

Frizzy hair is not a good look – and it hits both ladies and guys. Too much styling, the wrong products, humidity, over-processing and more can lead to dry, frizzy hair. We have put together some ideas and ways to tame all of that crazy frizz.

Getting rid of frizz can begin when you are in the shower with the right products. By picking up shampoos and conditioners with glycerin, you can help get your frizzy hair under control. Glycerin will get down into your hair’s fiber and help hydrate it from the inside while sealing in moisture. Also, keep in mind that you do not need to shampoo every day. Your hair’s own oils are a natural frizz tamer. On the days you do not shampoo, you should still apply a conditioner or smoothing dry oil. A smooth hair cuticle helps prevent frizz so deep-condition your hair once a week. Leave the product on for up to 5 minutes, so that it can take effect. Consider a hair mask as well that is created to repair your hair.

When You are Styling

Styling your hair can be a big part of your hair’s frizz. If your hair is already fragile, do not add to its condition by bleaching or dying your hair. Take a breather from this process to let your build back up. Daily styling with a hot tool will also reverse your efforts to fight frizz. The heat will cause additional damage to your hair’s cuticle. If you need to blow-dry your hair, use a diffuser, which limits the direct heat. Try to let your hair air dry whenever possible as well. When you need to brush through your hair, do it gently and when your hair is wet after showering. Putting anti-frizz products into play can help smooth and define your waves and curls.

Additional Every Day Tips

Your hair’s cuticle can also remain intact to fight frizz if you dry your hair with a microfiber towel and you pat or squeeze your hair dry. If you have longer hair, sleep with it in a loose braid or bun to help keep it in place and not cause a lot of friction. Silk or satin pillowcases will also help with your hair’s cuticle management. Do your best to not touch your hair throughout the day. When you work out, your sweat can dry out your hair. Spray a leave-in conditioner in areas that typically get sweaty.
