• Buzz cut. A buzz cut makes all your hair the same length. Depending on how short you want your hair, you can ask for a #3 guard(short), #2 guard (shorter) or a #1 guard (shortest).
• Crew cut. A crew cut is a little different from a buzz cut in that the hair is two different lengths. The sides are shorter than the top. The hairstylist typically uses a razor on the sides and does a scissor trim on top.
• Pompadour. This traditional haircut requires the hair to be long enough on top so it can be slicked back with gel or mousse. You can make the look modern by making the sides shorter.
• Taper fade. If you like your hair longer on top but would like it to “fade” as it goes down, ask for a taper fade. This requires the hairstylist to use clippers of different lengths on the back of your head and along the sides.
